A boonie hat is a form of wide-brim hat commonly used by the military. The hat was introduced to the United States Armed Forces during the Vietnam War, when U.S. Army Green Berets began wearing them in the field. The name is derived from "boonie", the abbreviated form of boondocks. Boondocks was originally American military slang derived from "bundok" referring to "mountain" during the Philippine-American War.
